Best Books I've Read in 2023
So, in 2023, I’ve read 122 books across all genres. I don’t think it’s easy to narrow it down to 10, so I will do 20, because I want to do a few from each genre I’ve read, so Let’s start: # 20: Tinderbox: The Untold Story of the Up Stairs Lounge Fire and the Rise of Gay Liberation by Robert W Fieseler (History/Non-Fiction) This book is probably one of the most underrated in terms of the history…

Barbara: What did you get Dick for his birthday?
Jason: I got him a Glutemaster
Barbara: Really? Me too!
Stephanie: I also got him a Glutemaster.
Duke, gesturing to himself and Tim: Looks like we had the same idea.
Jason, sighing: Kill me. Please tell me you didn’t get Dick a Glutemaster as well.
Cass: I got him… a Glutemaster 🥰
Later-
Dick, surrounded by Glutemasters: THIS IS THE BEST BIRTHDAY EVER!!

Shen Yuan getting transported into pidw isn't "the system punishing him for being a lazy internet hater," but instead representative of "step 1 of the creative process: getting so mad at something you decide to go write your own fucking book" in this essay I will
#svsss#scum villian self saving system#shen qingqiu#shen yuan#the fact that people think scum villain#-a series that examines and criticizes common tropes in fiction-#is somehow against criticism or being a little hater is wild to me#especially since shen qingqiu never gets punished for being a hater#heck- he's still a little hater by the end of the series#he mostly gets punished for treating life like a play and like he and the people around him are characters#(or in other words- he suffers for denying his own wants and emotions and his own sense of empathy)#I think some of y'all underestimate how much writing/art is inspired by creaters being little haters#like example off the top of my head-#the author of Iron Widow has been pretty vocal about the book being inspired by their hatred of Darling in the Franxx#I think my interpretation of Shen Yuan's transmigration is also supported by the fact that this series is an examines writing processes#side note- though i understand why people say Shen Yuan is lazy and think its a valid take it still doesnt sit right with me#i am probably biased because my own experiences with chronic pain and depression and isolation#but ya- i dont think Shen Yuan is lazy so much as he is deeply lonely and feels purposeless after denying parts of himself for 20ish years#like yall remember the online fandom boom from covid right?#being stuck completely alone in bed while feeling like shit for 20 days straight does shit to your brain#the fact that no one came to check on him + he wasn't exactly upset about leaving anyone behind supports the isolation interpretation too#+in the skinner demon arc he describes his life of being a faker/inability to stop being a faker now that he's Shen Qingqiu#as “so bland he's tempted to throw salt on himself” and “all he could do is lay around and wait for death” (<-paraphrasing)#bro wants to be doing stuff but is stuck in paralysis from repeatedly following scrips made by other people#another point on “Shen Yuan isn’t lazy” is just the sheer amount of studying that man does#also he did graduate college- how lazy can he really be#he doesnt know what hes doing but he at least tries to actively train his students#and he actually works on improving his own cultivation + spends quite a bit of time preping the mushroom body thing#+he's experiencing bouts of debilitating chronic pain throughout all this#but ya tldr: Shen Yuan's transmigration is an encouragement to write and not a punishment and also i dont think its fair to call him lazy

putting my prediction on record now that the coming decade is going to see the rise of viral-marketed fancy at-home water filtration systems, driving and driven by a drastic reduction in the quality of U.S. tap water (given that we are in a 'replacement era' where our current infrastructure is reaching the end of its lifespan--but isn't being replaced). also guessing that by the 2030s access to drinkable tap water will be a mainstream class issue, with low-income & unstably housed people increasingly forced to rely on expensive bottled water when they can't afford the up-front cost of at-home filtration--and with this being portrayed in media as a "moral failing" and short-sighted "choice," rather than a basic failure of our political & economic systems. really hope i'm just being alarmist, but plenty of this already happens in other countries, and the U.S. is in a state of decline, so. here's praying this post ages into irrelevance. timestamped April 2023
#apollo don't fucking touch this one#serious post#not a shitpost#hope i forget about this post and have no reason to ever look back on it one day#fyi i'm aware that access to potable water is already a major issue in parts of the U.S. yes i know flint michigan exists#i'm saying that this issue is going to GROW unless local & federal governments work together to fix it.#so it's a matter of if we trust them to fix it. And well--do you?#what are the chances the government just denies there's a problem until the water actually turns brown#at which point it's already been common knowledge for years and people have just become resigned and that's our new normal#i'm mean come on. how many of us already believe that we're being exposed to dangerous pollutants we don't know about and can't avoid#like that's pretty much just part of being a modern consumer. accepting that companies will happily endanger your life for a few pennies#and the most you'll get is like a $50 gift card as part of a class action rebate 20 years down the line#probably the history books will look back on Flint as a warning and a harbinger that went ignored#luxury condos will advertise their built-in top-of-the-line filtration systems--live here and you can drink water straight from your tap!#watch the elite professional class putting $700 dyson water filtration systems on their wedding registry#while the rest of us figure out how to fit water delivery into our grocery budget while putting 90% of our paycheck towards rent#also eggs are $15

I think if Steve Harrington ever did read The Hobbit, he would just find it 'meh'.
This would, if course, devastate Eddie.

Dear Anonymous Shithead
ai wish i could like this but honestly nico/percy is kinda... wll not exactly toxic but like it really isnt something anyone should ship
It is the year 2024 and there are truly still people on AO3 who have not learned how to navigate the very easy filter-system, huh. When will you people learn that comments like these are just truly so embarrassing for you, because they make you look stupid on multiple levels...?
Can't even decide if the choice to 1. not filter when that's such an easy tool to use, 2. open fics for ships you don't like because you don't have anything joyful to do in your life I guess and 3. comment on the fics for the ships you don't like to complain about its existence like that will change anything is the more ridiculous thing or the "not exactly toxic".
The "not exactly toxic" is deadass so funny to me, like, you don't even have the balls to properly insult the ship you that you bothered to actively seek out and complain about. It's not even toxic it's just mildly inconvenient I guess?? You didn't even have the balls to call it an unhealthy age gap or anything, you're just vaguely mildly uncomfortable, like c'mon, this was the explicit "Nico is a high school student and Percy goes to college" fic, I was, like, fully setting you up for success on the unhealthy age gap angle there!
Would love to see all the hypocritical, fully toxic ships that you do ship in your private sin chamber though.

Summoning does not come easily. Though she understands the principles and geometries, even crafted the arcane ink required for codices, she still could not summon. It is embarrassing, in a way, to have mastered all other forms of magic but to be stuck on this one. She devours text upon text, determined to move past whatever roadblock prevented her from enlightenment. There must be some book here, some tome that will unlock the secrets, teach her in a way she understands. She just needs to find it. —level 90 compendium

Top 20 Books Read in 2024
This year was rough but I read a lot to get through it! I read 157 books and counting and these are my favorites!
I have read 157 books and counting in 2024. Audiobooks are my soul! I love them so much! I had a few favorites. If you read my Halloween book list a lot of these will be familiar. 20: The World We Make by NK Jemison After I read the first book, I was thinking the sequel was going to be boring but I loved it. I do think that Aislyn could’ve been written better. But that’s just the opinion of a…

I think PART of why I've been feeling like. Bummed/self conscious about mind shrinkage, so to speak, is because
I haven't been able to create anything in MONTHS
I've barely read any fic, or watched anything beyond half a bob rewatch and Critical Role episodes
And not only would I like to have energy for more than this (like concentrating better on my DND games on Saturdays for ex) there's also a part of me that's like
Tired of the demands placed over people's hobbies
You've seen the posts, right? Read more fics, read more books, play games other than DND, read books by women, read books by POCs, read gay books play better games play indie video games listen to indie music, leave comments on fics, join this community/discord/bongo circle, also this artist you liked had a scandal: here are ten more things you should discover onstead, and so on forever and ever because this is the internet and millions of people with millions of opinions and passions and needs get mixed together
And to be clear: I understand those posts aren't directed at me and I understand the sentiment! I really do!
I am also just tired of coming to the one website that doesn't have a constant background noise of "hey! Buy our stuff to Life better" and be surrounded by a constant murmur of "Here's how you can Hobby better!"
It's just *exhausting* honestly, and it's not something anyone does on purpose or anything it's just... Well, when you start cumulating it, it's still creating a general landscape of being told you might not be wrong about stuff but you could be more right
And I'm fucking tired

3 and 13 for the book asks?
3 What were your top five books of the year?
this is so impossible but my gut answer is
metal from heaven
the saint of bright doors
the skin and its girl
walking practice
the stardust grail
13 What were your least favorite books of the year?
continuing from the last ask, Where The River Meets The Soul, Sea of Broken Glass, and The Endless Sea Between Us are a couple selfpub ones that had potential in the concept but I thought were just really not well written. The Marble Queen and The Baker & The Bard are a couple graphic novels that I thought had not great writing or storytelling, too
(end-of-year book ask)
